El Pícaro is a young red wine from Toro made with Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) grapes from vines between 50 and 70 years old.
This wine is produced by Bodega Matsu and is a wine that does not interfere with natural processes, guided by biodynamic viticulture methods. For its preparation, the harvest is done manually during the first half of October and is transported in boxes and small trailers. Subsequently, fermentation takes place in concrete tanks of 15,000 kg, the temperature does not exceed 24ºC to maintain freshness in the fruit that characterizes this wine.
Malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, once complete, it is neither filtered nor clarified, trying to preserve its natural features. El Pícaro spends three months in wooden barrels.
Picaro means ‘rogue’ or ‘rascal’, and this wine is a youthful interpretation of the Toro region’s style. The grapes come from mature vines of over 50 years of age, but the wine spends only three months in oak, preserving their natural fruit profile. Vivid crimson-purple in the glass. Aromas are of ripe blackberries and raspberries, with subtle hints of fresh cocoa. The palate is bold yet supple, with ripe tannins and a mineral grip. Enjoy on its own or with boldly flavoured pasta dishes or spicy meat skewers.
As the youngest generation in the Matsu range, El Picaro embodies the characteristics of a strong young man, valiant, impertinent, and uncontrollable.
Vinification
Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, to retain the freshness of the Tempranillo fruit harvested from 90-year-old vines, with the minimum of filtration to preserve the natural characteristics of the wine.
Tasting
This wine has a lovely profound red robe, an expression of its young age. It has an intense aroma of dark red fruits such as blackberries and blueberries, mineral notes also appear, giving this wine good complexity. In the mouth, this wine produces a rich fruit sensation, with good body, and a pleasant hint of liquorish, contributed by the maturity of the grapes from which this wine is made.
