The Liberties
We are well named. The area known as The Liberties grew up beyond Dublin’s old city walls, beyond sovereign and private jurisdictions; free. And we stayed that way: a little stubborn, occasionally rebellious. But always with an open heart.
We like our opinions strong and our whiskey to match.
And we have a story like no other.
This wild and wayward quarter of old Dublin. For it was indeed a notorious place, with danger and intrigue waiting on every cobbled corner. Yet it was industrious too – noisy with the shouts of hawkers and traders, the clang and clatter of forges, printing presses and tanners… There were also hidden distilleries and illicit taverns.
The people were strong, independent, inventive: they had to be. And they welcomed both criminals and the cream of society.
This lively and colourful quarter is unlike any other in our city’s long history. Indeed, many of us believe that the people of The Liberties are the real, true Dubliners. And it is certainly the case that we have played our part in Dublin’s cultural, political, industrial and commercial life since the very beginning, over a thousand years ago.
We have always worked hard here. Generations of traders and craftsmen have made their home here: tanners, weavers, printers, blacksmiths and carpenters; and of course brewers and distillers.
Yes, we have always worked hard. And relaxed just as hard.
Make yourself at home. You’re very welcome.
